Dymaxion Car

Posted on 4 April 2023 by George Rose

90 years ago Buckminster Fuller introduced the Dymaxion car, an aerodynamic vehicle built for fuel efficiency and high speed. Over 6m long, with a V8 Ford engine, it could supposedly hit over 120mph. Whether you would want to or not was a different manner, although Fuller accepted no fault on the behalf of his vehicle, the first prototype crashed at the Chicago Century of Progress fair in 1933, rolling over and killing its driver.

Prototype one was rebuilt, only to be later destroyed by fire. This was followed by two further prototypes, before the car was consigned to the annals of history.

Buckminster Fuller returned to architecture, and went on to have a very busy life. His last interview was with Norman Foster, architect of the Millau Viaduct that featured in Top Gear Series 7, Episode 3, where Jeremy, Richard, and James each took a favourite supercar, a Pagani Zonda, a Ford GT, and a Ferrari F430, on a trans-France road trip.
